In 1991, from specific meetings, focused on Ecotoxicology and Environmental Chemistry, PETROBRAS promoted the 1st Technical Ecotoxicology Meeting, in the city of Rio de Janeiro (RJ), bringing together various laboratories to present the results obtained in different research units in the country. In 1992, the 1st Ecotoxicology Meeting was held, promoted by Riocell SA, in Guaíba (RS), a pulp and paper industry that used toxicity tests in effluents assessments. The enthusiasm of those who attended that meeting determined its second edition in 1993, in the city of Rio Grande (RS).
In 1994 the event, which took place in the coastal city of Tramandaí (RS), was renamed as Brazilian Ecotoxicology Congress (ECOTOX) and began to receive a wide audience of national attendees as well as from other countries in Latin America, North America, and Europe. After the IV ECOTOX, held in Salvador (BA) in 1996, an important milestone was the V ECOTOX, held in 1998 in Itajaí (SC), which brought together an audience of 400 participants, including representatives of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry. (SETAC). In this event, a broader discussion was held about the institutionalization of the Brazilian Society of Ecotoxicology (ECOTOX BRASIL), as well as its insertion at the international level. In 2000, the VI ECOTOX was held in São Carlos (SP), concurrently with the III Latin American Ecotoxicology Congress, and in 2002, the congress was held in Vitória (ES), where the creation of a means of dissemination of ECOTOX BRASIL was discussed. That discussion culminated in the structuring of the journal of the Brazilian Society of Ecotoxicology, launched at the 2006 event, as well as the establishment of workshops in this biannual interval to discuss important topics within Ecotoxicology.
At the congress held in Florianópolis (SC), in 2004, it was possible to integrate experts from 21 Brazilian states and 22 countries, with a record of 600 participants. In 2006, in the city of São Pedro (SP) the IX ECOTOX toke place and, in 2008, the X ECOTOX come about in the city of Bento Gonçalves (RS). Both maintained the Ecotox high-level tradition, with an audience of approximately 500 participants. The 11th edition of ECOTOX took place in Bombinhas Beach (SC), with a record audience of over 600 attendees, and the participation of the Brazilian Society of Ecotoxicology as a regional chapter of SETAC LA was discussed.
The XII ECOTOX was held in Porto de Galinhas (PE) and this event was attended by almost 800 participants, and more than 850 scientific abstracts were submitted. During the event in Porto de Galinhas it was decided that the XIII ECOTOX would be held in Guarapari (ES), in September 2014. The XIII ECOTOX was attended by 735 delegates, with 730 abstracts approved. The XIV ECOTOX took place in September 2016, in Curitiba (PR) with the participation of more than 970 attendees, representing 25 Brazilian states and a record of foreign participants. The XV ECOTOX was held in Aracaju (SE) in 2018, and once again was attended by representatives from almost all Brazilian States and 9 different countries.
Now, in 2021, the Brazilian Congress of Ecotoxicology, for the first time in its history, will be 100% virtual. We expect a great audience connected with us from August 16 to 19 to discuss the Contribution of Ecotoxicology to the goals of the 2030 Agenda.
